Why I Started Writing

My “voice” is actually truest through my hands. That is not what got me started in writing though. I began to write after reading my Grandfather’s blog posts over the years. He is in his eighties now, and is still giving voice to observations. I’ve enjoyed reading his posts over the years as he has a very distinct style. I started my own creative writing about my past adventures.

Why I started Between the Ears

At the start of 2025, I decided to write a story about growing up feeling like an outsider. Fictional writing can grant authors the opportunity to rewrite past observations. I aim to provide a positive outlook on tough life lessons. Growing up, I almost exclusively connected with books about animals, particularly Aesop’s Fables. I felt almost lost with stories about people, unless it had a very strong hero’s journey. As a current horse owner, I am enjoying the creative challenge to bring character to Panther and her friends, while staying true to their instincts. It helps that I have a mustang I can directly observe.

Panther is half-mustang, half- quarter horse. She is born in the wild, but she does not have the typical mustang life. Through circumstance, she finds herself in the domesticated world of horses. Panther has to adapt to many changes in her life, all while being a little too wild. Panther finds that her heritage poses significant challenges to her, but not in ways that truly matter.
